KATHMANDU, May 27: The garbage collection of Kathmandu Valley will not be halted even during the rainy season, thanks to the blacktopped road up to the landfill site in Banchare Danda.

In the previous years, the unpaved road used to get damaged during the rainy season causing problems in transporting the waste from the valley to Banchare Danda.

The government had awarded the contract for the construction of the road used to take Kathmandu Valley’s waste to Banchare Danda through a fast track process some time ago.

Sagar Bhandari, engineer of the Balaju-Trishuli-Chhare-Bidur Road Project, said that as soon as the Council of Ministers decided to award the contract through fast track, the work was started and completed within four months.

A decade ago, the Department of Roads had handed over the responsibility of the construction of the Balaju-Ranipauwa road to Sailung Construction. Bhandari said that the contract was scrapped as the road was not constructed even though the construction period was extended several times. Engineer Bhandari said, "The contract was scrapped in June and the construction started with a new contract in October itself."

He said that the new contract started on October 12, 2022 and the work started on October 14, 2022.

People were suffering due to the blocked road for a long time. Due to the rains, the roads were flooded and the vehicles carrying garbage could not go, so the garbage trucks used to return every year. Last year, during the rainy season, the government showed interest in completing the construction of the road as the garbage could not be collected for months.
