KATHMANDU, August 20: It will take 10 more days to effectively manage the garbage piled up in the streets of Kathmandu Valley for two months, according to the Personal Secretariat of Mayor Balendra Shah.

The garbage collection was disrupted after the locals from Sisdol and Banchare Danda obstructed the transportation of garbage time and again.

"If locals do not obstruct garbage transportation and the road to reach the landfill site remains normal, it would take 10 days to complete the garbage management," said Sunil Lamsal, a member of Mayor Shaha's Secretariat.

Lamsal stated that 8,000 tippers of garbage from 18 local levels of the Kathmandu Valley need to be managed for now. Once the work of management resumes at a normal pace, it would take at least 10 days to dispose of the garbage accumulated so far in Kathmandu Valley. Chief district Officers from Kathmandu, Dhading and Nuwakot and locals from Sisdol and Banchare Danda had signed a four-point agreement, which paved the way for easing the garbage management.

As per the agreement, the tippers transporting the garbage must not leak the liquid waste while reaching the landfill site. Currently, there are only 75 tippers with Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) which are not leaky. They transport the waste twice a day.

KMC is planning to take in rent 150 more tippers so that the way that leads to landfill sites would not be littered with liquid waste, added Lamsal. The garbage collection has begun after the agreement. KMC has further planned to use 300 tippers to collect and manage the valley waste.
