-Coconut oil (2 tablespoons)

-Rock salt/ Himalayan pink salt (A pinch of it would do)

-Peppermint essential oil (3-4 tablespoons)

Method

1. Mix ingredients in a glass container and shake well until salt dissolves.

2. Use required. You’ll have to shake with each use.

3. If the coconut oil solidifies, you can run the glass jar under warm water.

How to use it

Gargle with this homemade mouthwash for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Use in the morning or whenever you want to freshen your breath throughout the day.

Why is it helpful?

All the ingredients found in this mouthwash are natural hygiene protectors. Coconut oil, in particular, has the biggest role to play. Not only has coconut oil been used traditionally for oil pulling, but using it regularly can also benefit your dental health and keep it clean. It is very helpful in warding off bacteria and germs, preventing cavities from forming. As you gargle with this solution, the bacteria present beneath the teeth and gum surface get washed away by the liquid oil.

Coconut oil is also very helpful in maintaining oral hygiene because, with good fatty acid content, it also comes loaded with antimicrobial properties which keep germs away. Used regularly, it also prevents gingivitis and halitosis (bad breath) which happens as the bacteria spread.

The salt in the mouthwash is also another must have for good dental hygiene. Salt can raise the pH levels in the mouth and create an alkaline environment which makes it difficult for bacteria to survive. It is also not very harsh on the surface, which is why it is also prescribed as a natural healing aid by dentists and doctors since it doesn't irritate the sensitive skin around the teeth.

The presence of peppermint extract in the mouthwash gets rid of plaque and ensures that you have fresh breath for longer. It effectively kills germs and microbes as well. Menthol, an essential component present in peppermint oil has a cooling sensation which does away with any bad smell. Apart from this, peppermint also contains strong notes of nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and calcium which all work in maintaining stronger teeth and jaw.
