SURKHET, Sep 7: Karnali provincial government has offered two options to Surkhet flood victims—either return home or live in an integrated settlement.
Surkhet flood victims have been living under makeshift tents for the last four years. A massive flood had hit the then Tatapani VDC of the district on October 14, 2014. Altogether 115 persons were killed in the flood and 2,329 families were displaced. Even today, over 800 are living in eight derelict camps in the middle of the Galfa forest nearby.

“We have asked them to either go home or live in an integrated settlement,” said the province’s Internal Affairs and Law Minister Naresh Bhandari, who heads a panel formed to resolve the problems of the flood victims.
“The provincial government will build integrated settlement will all necessary amenities,” said Bhandari.
Minister Bhandari said five committees have been set up to collect details on the number of the flood victims and their financial conditions. He said after the details are collected, the federal government would provide the necessary funds for the victim’s resettlement including land for the landless victims and financial aid to those with homes.
He also said the provincial government has started search for land for setting up three integrated settlements in different locations.
