Govt discusses EPS language test row with Korean Ambassador

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: The government has held a discussion with South Korean ambassador to Nepal, Park Tae-Young, regarding the language test criteria under the Employment Permit System (EPS), that allows Nepali nationals to work in Korea under a bilateral agreement.

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: The government has held a discussion with South Korean ambassador to Nepal, Park Tae-Young, regarding the language test criteria under the Employment Permit System (EPS), that allows Nepali nationals to work in Korea under a bilateral agreement.


The discussion has been held following the incident that led to the death of two persons during a protest over eligibility of taking the Korean language test.

Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security Kewal Prasad Bhandari and Korean Ambassador to Nepal Park discussed the matter on Tuesday in the ministry. During the meeting, the Korean side was informed about the decision of the government and the court to allow Nepali youth to fill the form for the manufacturing sector, who had earlier participated in ship building, according to Spokesperson at the Ministry of Labour, Rajeev Pokharel.


The proposal made by Nepal was taken positively by the Korean side. Pokharel said that the various problems seen in the EPS system will soon be resolved by the technical teams of the two countries.


Currently, 175,000 Nepali citizens are waiting to go to Korea for work after passing the Korean language test, according to the ministry.


On the occasion, the Korean side said that the incident that happened in Balkumari last Friday was tragic, and on behalf of the Korean government, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and paid tribute to the deceased youths.
