KATHMANDU, Oct 3: Ministry of Education has upgraded 92 schools to secondary status in line with the new Education Act. According to the Department of Education (DoE), it has given a go ahead to 92 schools that were operating classes up to grade 10 to run grade 11 classes.
“We have granted secondary status to more schools,” said Yogendra Baral, under-secretary at the DoE. “Until now, there were 3,673 schools operating 11th and 12th grades across the nation,” he added.
There are 29,630 public schools across the country while some 6,000 private schools in the country, according to the DoE.
Around 8 million students across the country will be eligible to pursue secondary education from the current academic year.
The Office of President approved the eighth amendment to Education Act 1972 about three months ago. The bill of the act was endorsed by the Parliament about four months ago.
The amended act has envisioned the school level education at basic/elementary (grades one to eight) and secondary level (grades nine to 12).
The amended act provisions two categories of private schools--new ones under trusts and old ones under company; free education up to grade 12; transfer of teachers as civil servants; and evaluation and promotion of teachers on the basis of school results, according to the MoE.
It also scraps the Higher Secondary Education Board, integrates plus two level into school level education and sorts out decades-long problem of temporary teachers.
The new act has also made provisions for forming National Education Council, National Examination Board (NEB) and Education Review Office.
The MoE formed the NEB about two months ago.
