Govt forms task force to study feasibility of cannabis cultivation

KATHMANDU, Nov 7: The government has formed a task force under the coordination of the Ministry of Home Affairs to study the feasibility of cannabis cultivation.


In the meeting held on Monday at the Ministry of Finance under the chairmanship of Prakash Sharan Mahat, a working group was formed under the coordination of the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Industry, Law, Foreign Affairs and the representative members of the Nepal Police and the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Finance Minister Mahat had instructed the task force to submit its report within one month after starting its work.


This task force has been given two subject mandates. It will investigate how cannabis can be used as medicine and the potential of industrialization from cannabis. The task force will start research on whether hemp stalks, leaves and fibers can be used to make clothes.


In the budget of the current fiscal year, it was mentioned to study the possibility of cannabis cultivation. In item 105 of the budget statement, Finance Minister Mahat mentioned that the feasibility of cannabis cultivation for medicinal use will be studied.
