Rekha Sharma, spokesperson for the government, said that the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday took a decision to review the prevailing restraint on import of mobile phone sets by the migrant workers. As of now, the government has allowed an individual migrant worker returning to the homeland to bring in only a single mobile phone for personal use.

Citing the depleting foreign currency reserves, Nepal Rastra Bank had vowed one and a half years ago to restrict import of conspicuous products including the number of mobile sets. Backed by the central bank’s suggestion, the Department of Customs issued a notice asking the returnee migrant workers as well as those arriving in Nepal from foreign countries to bring with them only a single unit of tablet, computer, laptop and mobile phone for personal use. “Import of these items in more than the prescribed limit is subjected to customs duty or will be seized,” reads the then notice of the DoC .
