KATHMANDU, Sept 17: The government has started operating nearly three dozen fair price shops in 38 districts from Saturday with the aim of giving respite to consumers during the upcoming festivals.
According to the Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC), as many as 41 fair price shops will be selling daily essentials like rice, pulse, beaten rice, edible oils, flour and live goats at subsidized rates. Buyers can get a discount of Rs 7 per kg on purchase of rice, pulses, beaten rice and flour and a similar amount of discount in a liter of edible oil.

Likewise, a discount of Rs 10 per kg will be provided on the live goats, which the government entity will start selling after Ghatasthapana, the first day of Dashain. The FMTC is selling 3,000 live goats and 1,000 mountain goats at subsidized rates from its outlets.
The FMTC has been operating the fair price shops at four locations—Thapathali, Ram Shah Path, Nakkhu and Suryabinayak– of the Kathmandu Valley. These outlets will be in operation until October-end.
