KATHMANDU, A groom has been arrested by the police from the marriage hall for demanding a dowry of Rs 5 million from the bride's side.


The arrested person is 32-year-old Anurag Rauniyar, who hails from Duhabi Municipality-6 in Sunsari and currently lives in Tahachal, Kathmandu.

Rauniyar, who received a green card in the US, was getting married on June 27 at Lisera Reception Party Palace in Kathmandu.


During the marriage, the groom threatened to cancel the marriage if he did not receive Rs 5 million, saying that he did not receive the dowry as much as he had asked for and that the wedding guests were not welcomed well. According to the police, the groom's side has already taken Rs 2 million from the bride's family.


“As the dispute escalated, the bride was insulted and assaulted in the marriage hall,” the police added.


According to the police, District Court, Kathmandu has given a five-day deadline for investigating the dowry- related crime case.
