KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) reported a record daily jump of 1,111 coronavirus infections on Thursday, taking Nepal's COVID-19 national tally to 35,529 as cases surged across the country.
At a virtual media briefing, Jageshwar Gautam, the spokesperson for the MoHP, said that 1,111 new cases of coronavirus were detected through 12,629 PCR tests conducted at various labs across the country in the past 24 hours. "Of the newly-infected, 777 are males and 334 are females," he said.

This is the highest single-day spike in the cases of coronavirus in Nepal after the country reported the first coronavirus case in late January this year. The Kathmandu Valley alone witnessed 377 new cases of coronavirus, the highest single-day spike in the Valley.
According to Spokesperson Gautam, 569 cases of recovery were recorded in various parts of the country in the past 24 hours, taking Nepal's recovery tally to 20,073. There are currently 15,273 active cases of coronavirus in Nepal.
The spokesperson said that eight coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in various parts of the country in the past 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 death toll to 183. Spokesperson Gautam also said that the government has expanded the scope of COVID-19 testing keeping in mind the rising cases of coronavirus.
"Various government agencies are working round-the-clock to contain the novel coronavirus disease. So, let's help the government's efforts for the same," he said.
