KATHMANDU, Jan 14: The parliamentary Education and Health Committee has recommended a probe into alleged irregularities at the Nepal Engineering College (NEC), Bhaktapur.
A panel headed by lawmaker Yogesh Bhattari to study the alleged irregularities at NEC submitted its report to the parliamentary committee on Sunday, recommending probe into the irregularities by a panel headed by a joint-secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST). The report also recommended forming a new management committee at the college and a new working committee to recommend a new modality to operate the college.

NEC, which is affiliated to Pokhara University, was registered as public organization at the Bhaktapur District Administration Office on August 21, 2003. The then Changunarayan VDC provided 174 ropani [8.85 hectares] of public land to the college to develop infrastructures.
However, Lambodar Neupane, the then chairman of the college management committee, on May 8, 2017 registered the college as a private entity.
But the students and locals protested against the move after which the college removed private from its signboard, its documents and stationery. However there are two parallel management committees in existence at the college and they have been accused of embezzling Rs 200 million. The college has 2,200 students and 200 staffers.
The meeting of the parliament’s Education and Health Committee on Sunday briefly discussed the issue after receiving the report.
