HELAMBU, June 17: While many schools in the major cities with adequate internet and other facilities are struggling to operate and run classes, a school in the remote Himalayan village of Melamchi Ghyang, Helambu, presents a different story.
Despite limited accessibility to internet services and geographical difficulties, the school has begun Zoom and Google online classes accepting the challenges.
Shree Melamchi Ghyang Secondary School (SMGSS) located at an altitude of around 3000m above sea level in the upper belt of Helambu, Sindhupalchowk district with 300 plus students from more than 15 different districts has begun its academic session online.

SMGSS, one of the renowned schools of the district, was closed following the government’s lockdown order enforced to curb the spread of COVID-19. The school then began operating virtually through online classes targeting only the students of grade 10 preparing for Secondary Education Examination (SEE). Gradually, the school administration has now initiated Google and Zoom classes for the students of all levels.
According to Purna Bahadur Gautam, principal of the school, the school administration is now conducting zoom online classes for students of grades six to 10 and Google classes for the students of primary level. “New admission procedures will also be conducted online”, he added.
The zoom classes run from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. Teachers host the classes and students join. Google class is however a bit different. Here, teachers post study materials and lessons. It could be a text, video or any other material. Students visit the Google classes, study and do the assigned works, according to Tika Ram Limbu, vice-principal and faculty member of the school.
Earlier, the school administration had provided faculty members with the required technical training to conduct online classes of one week.
