Human Rights and Peace Society awards Mithai Devi Bishwakarma with Badri Pahari Social Service Award

KATHMANDU, April 23: The Human Rights and Peace Society has decided to award Mithai Devi Bishwakarma for her significant contribution to the field of social justice for almost seven decades.

KATHMANDU, April 23: The Human Rights and Peace Society has decided to award Mithai Devi Bishwakarma for her significant contribution to the field of social justice for almost seven decades.


Bishwakarma will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and a certificate amidst a program to be organized in connection with the International Human Rights Day in Mangsir 2080 BS.

Born on February 21, 1937 in Indrachowk, Kathmandu, Mithai Devi Bishwakarma is the first woman from the Dalit community to study up to the graduate level. She actively participated in the Pashupatinath temple entry movement of the Dalit community in 2011 BS.


At a young age, in 2012 BS, she founded the Nepal Pariginit Nari Sangh and established a school in the Dalit slums of Kathmandu through that organization and made a significant contribution to providing education to the children of the Dalit community.


Mithai Devi, who was born in a Kapali family of the Newar community and contributed to raising the consciousness of women of the Dalit community by struggling for education. After marrying TR Bishwakarma, her activism in Dalit liberation movement increased.


She has received 10 awards and honors including the Ambedkar International Award, provided by the Indian Dalit Literature Academy. Apart from establishing the Mother's Care School, she was also actively involved in the establishment of the Social Development Hostel for students from the Dalit community.


Biswakarma has also contributed to the field of journalism and has edited various weekly and monthly magazines. Her book titled "Nepali Women's Status and Status 2061 BS as well as many other articles have been published.
