KATHMANDU, April 14: An agreement has been reached between the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) to collaborate and cooperate in order to reduce and manage disaster risks.
Azmat Ulla, Head of Delegation, IFRC, Nepal, and NDRRMA Chief Executive Anil Pokharel held a meeting on Thursday and took a decision to this effect.
On the occasion, they stressed the need for increasing the efficacy of local governments in Nepal for the effective management of disasters. Ulla talked about humanitarian service while Pokharel presented a report on the latest activities of the Authority.
Better governance is a key to reducing flood risks
The IFRC has been providing assistance and carrying out various humanitarian assistance in Nepal through the Nepal Red Cross Society. Two months ago, it handed over 30 new ambulances and 15 upgraded ones to the Nepal Red Cross Society. It cost around 1.2 million Swiss Franc to purchase the ambulances, said the IFRC.
Similarly, it provided assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and earthquakes. It has continued to provide support to the Nepal Red Cross Society for carrying out vaccination programs in 22 districts of the country.
More than 150,000 volunteers for the Red Cross Society have been engaged in social work across the country, it has been shared.
