KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Speaker Onsari Gharti has agreed to table an urgent motion of public importance filed against Lokman Singh Karki, chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), for discussion in the House after the formation of a new government.
Lawmakers Gagan Thapa, Dhanraj Gurung and Shyam Shrestha had registered the urgent motion of public importance in the parliament last week demanding that the speaker conduct discussion over the impeachment of Karki. The motion was registered in support of Dr Govinda KC, who raised the issue that got widespread support from various walks of life.
KC, who staged his eighth fast-onto-death in a bid to reform the medical education sector, had demanded impeachment of Karki for obstructing various reform initiatives taken by government bodies.
After KC's demand garnered wide public support, lawmaker Thapa and two other parliamentarians formally registered the proposal in the parliament.
Gharti had called the three lawmakers and chief whips of three major political parties for consultation at her chamber on Sunday.
"She said that it would be better to discuss the issue only after formation of a new government as implementation of any decision from the House can be more effective after the formation of new government," lawmaker Gurung told Republica. "We are positive about her proposal."
