India lifts ban on onion export

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: The Indian government has lifted the ban on onion export. A committee formed under the chairmanship of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has decided to lift the ban on onion export.

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: The Indian government has lifted the ban on onion export. A committee formed under the chairmanship of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has decided to lift the ban on onion export.


In an effort to curb escalating onion prices domestically, the Indian government had imposed an export ban in December 2023. Following the ban, onion prices in India experienced a decline.

Now, with a ministerial decision, the Government of India has permitted the export of 300,000 metric tons of onions. Additionally, the Indian government has also granted permission to import 50,000 tons of onions from Bangladesh.


With the Indian government lifting the ban on onion exports, the pathway for importing onions into Nepal has now reopened.
