KATHMANDU, Jan 26: Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri said that there could be obstruction imposed on Nepal's export of ginger to India over phytosanitary requirement as agreed between the two countries.

Responding to a query at an interaction organized by Reporters' Club in the capital on Thursday, Ambassador Puri, while dismissing reports of any embargo on agro products, said that the requirements need to be fulfilled for smooth exports of agriculture products from Nepal to India.

"There is no embargo. There are phytosanitary requirements in agricultural exports. This process needs to be completed. It is also important to know that ginger has to be of Nepali origin," the envoy said.

Ambassador Puri added that the trade agreement reached between Nepal and India has clearly stated about the phytosanitary requirement.

India has lately obstructed Nepal's export of ginger, blocking entry of trucks carrying Nepali ginger. After being stranded at Kakarbhitta check-point in Jhapa district for two weeks, five dozen trucks loaded with ginger were forced to turn back. Indian customs refused to provide them entry permits.
