Indian ‘smuggler’ shot dead in Kanchanpur

KANCHANPUR, March 5: An Indian national, who was allegedly involved in drug smuggling, was shot dead by police at Belauri Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district on Thursday evening.

KANCHANPUR, March 5: An Indian national, who was allegedly involved in drug smuggling, was shot dead by police at Belauri Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district on Thursday evening.


The deceased has been identified as Govinda Singh, 20, of Pilbhit district of India, according to police.

Acting on a tip off that a gang of drug smugglers was entering Nepal from India, the Belaurei Area Police Office had deployed a five-member police team under the command of Sub Inspector. Police spotted a group of four Indian youths, who were coming to Nepal carrying bags at  Belauri-8, Khoptinala. 


As police proceeded to inspect their bags, the gang opened fire at police, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Amar Bahadur Thapa. Singh received bullet injury after police constable Bir Bahadur Saud opened the counter fire through his Type 77 Chinese Pistol.


Singh, who sustained severe injuries on the left chest, breathed his last at 7:25 PM while undergoing treatment at Ishan Memorial Hospital, Belauri. His mortal remains were identified later after his relatives came in contact with police on Thursday itself. “His dead body will be handed over to his relatives after postmortem,” DSP Thapa added.


Police said that a group of Indian nationals including Singh had been involved in smuggling of drugs and counterfeit notes.
