Interaction on making local government effective

Dhulikhel, March 16: A discourse has come to the fore as to how the local level – which is on implementation after dissolution of local body – could be made more effective and functional. 

At a two-day interaction programme organized by the Development Committee of the Legislature-Parliament on 'How to make local body effective?', lawmakers stressed the need to hold the local level elections so as to devolve the authority of central administrative secretariat, Singha Durbar, to the rural municipalities. 

Development Committee Chairperson Rabindra Adhikari shared that the programme was organized to collect inputs and recommendations on how the local government having the executive, legislative and judiciary rights could be made more effective. 

Also speaking on the occasion, lawmakers including Chinkaji Shrestha, Prakash Poudel, Ram Kumar Bhattarai, Deepak Prasad Kuinkel, Yagya Bahadur Thapa, Anita Devkota, Pranjana Sardar and Shanta Manabi spoke the importance of bringing Local Level


Operations Act at the earliest possible. 

On the occasion, Local Government Coordination Expert Dermot Shields had presented a working paper on local government with a case study of Dailekh district. 

Joint Secretary at Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development Dr Hari Poudel and DFID Team Leader Tom Wingfield also put their remarks on strengthening local government. 

The interaction is being attended by Parliamentary Development Committee members, ministry officials, representatives of development partners and journalists. The event is concluding today. RSS
