International workshop on 'dignified menstruation' to be held in May

KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Government is to host an International Conference on Dignified Menstruation with an objective of enhancing public awareness to stop harmful practices related to menstruation.


The event will be held in Kathmandu from May 26 to 28. Information to this was shared by the Minister for Women, Children and Elderly Citizens Parbat Gurung during today's meeting of the parliamentary committee on Women and Social Development Committee.

"The efforts we have made so far to stop harmful practices have some shortcomings, which we need to correct," he said. On the occasion, the committee directed the government to take stern action to abolish the harmful practices related to Chhaupadi. 


"There is no alternative to put an end to Chhaupadi, as it a harmful practice," the committee Chair Nirudevi Pal said. 


At the meeting, Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai shared that the Home Ministry has so far dismantled 920 menstruation or Chhaupadi huts in Accham, one in Jajarkot, seven in Dang, 20 in Salyan, 17 in Dailekh, and 300 in Surkhet. Around 1,800 such sheds will be brought to ground in a few days, he added.
