KATHMANDU, Sept 25: ‘Jyaanmaya’ is a musical play based on a fascinating love story of two youngsters dealing with various struggles in life for the sake of their love. The story is derived from the novel ‘Jyaanmaya’ by Madan Puraskar winning writer Saru Bhakta.
In the story we meet a couple, Mane and Kanchhi. Mane is a poor woodcutter while Kanchi is the only daughter of a middle class family. They decide to elope one day to escape from Kanchhi’s drunkard father who is ready to give away his daughter for a bottle of alcohol.
They make many sacrifices along the way to save their love. They work hand in hand and showcase a beautiful example of togetherness. Audience will be impressed by the Nepali village life depicted in the play that mixes the wittiness of village folks.
The characters are connected among each other and present unity even though they are encountering many problems in their day-to-day lives. We get to see well choreographed dance sequences throughout the play that heightens the characters’ acting even more. The use of light is captivating and very few props are used to give the play a darker tone.
Overall, music lovers will enjoy watching ‘Jyaanmaya’.
The play features a young cast that includes Kripa Bajracharya, Rear Rai, Nisha Karki, Samyog Guragain, Sarada Adhikari and Kunti Simali among others.
“The play is mostly presented through music as I believe dance reflects the soul and is a major factor to progress the dramatic form,” said the play’s director Namrata KC.

‘Jyaanmaya’ will be staged everyday (except Mondays) at Mandala Theater till October 1.
