Kailali sees increase in the number of Dolphins

TIKAPUR, Sept 7: The number of Dolphins has increased in Kailali as compared to the past. According to a census conducted by Dolphin Aquatic and Biodiversity Conservation Nepal, the number of dolphins has increased to 70 including 15 children.

TIKAPUR, Sept 7: The number of Dolphins has increased in Kailali as compared to the past. According to a census conducted by Dolphin Aquatic and Biodiversity Conservation Nepal, the number of dolphins has increased to 70 including 15 children.


Chairman of the organization Bhoj Raj Dhungana said that 35 people counted dolphins simultaneously in 13 different places. The organization had conducted the census on September 6 and 7.

He said that the official census of Dolphins was conducted in 2016 and 2018 and the number of Dolphins then were recorded 65 and 55, respectively. 


Dhungana said although the locals counted the Dolphins in 2017, 2019 and 2020, it was not considered official. Most of the Dolphins are seen in Mohana-Pathariya, Kanda-Pathariya and Patharaiya-Garinala confluence. “Up to 15 Dolphins have been spotted at one time,” he said.


Residents of Tikapur and Bhajani municipalities are involved in Dolphin conservation for a long time. The Dolphin conservation centers have been established in 14 different places, while three eco-clubs and nine Dolphin clubs have been formed in the community. About 60,000 locals are directly or indirectly involved in Dolphin conservation.
