KATHMANDU, Oct 20: Should suspended chief commissioner of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Lokman Singh Karki step down voluntarily as he faces serious allegations in the impeachment motion registered against him in Parliament?
Sunil Pokherel, an advocate and former general secretary of Nepal Bar Association, said that it would be better for Karki to resign voluntarily on moral grounds as lawmakers are now questioning his eligibility and his performance on the job.

“If he clings to the position, questions might arise over the credibility of the institution itself,” he added.
Another advocate, Bipin Adhikari, said however that it would be interesting to see how Karki defends himself against the allegations against him. “The impeachment motion has been registered, and it will be interesting to watch how things unfold,” he added.
Adhikari said that the misdeeds of politicians and businessmen may also be exposed when Karki defends himself against the allegations.
He further said that the impeachment will be determined by how Parliament handles the overall process as an impeachment is a complex affair. He said that the general public may get to know the inside story of why and how Karki came to be appointed chief of the anti-graft body and who were behind his appoinment.
