Kathmandu's Thamel and Durbarmarg to operate 24/7 under Home Ministry initiative

KATHMANDU, March 20: Under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, preparations are being made to open the Thamel and Durbarmarg areas of Kathmandu 24 hours a day.


The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, will be responsible for security and other management. The District Security Committee will plan accordingly.

“Internal preparations have already started. At the latest, it will open within the new year (Baishakh 1), said Jitendra Basnet, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu – “Security is fully guaranteed. After the market opens, we plan and implement more based on the problems and responses.”


Based on the experience of Thamel and Durbarmarg, the Ministry of Home Affairs plans to gradually operate other tourist areas for 24 hours. Accordingly, the Secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister has said that coordination is being done with the local administration.


According to the local administration, the time has been fixed to conduct business in four groups according to the nature of both areas.
