KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started removing algae from the Ranipokhari in a bid to make it clean and more beautiful.

KMC started removing algae from the pond from Monday to maintain the beauty of the historical Ranipokhari as algae started covering the pond there. The cleaning is being done with support of 20 municipal police personnel daily, said KMC Municipal Police Chief, Dhanapati Sapkota.

He added, "The National Reconstruction Authority has not handed over the Ranipokhari to KMC after its reconstruction. However, we started removing the algae as the heritage site is under our jurisdiction."

Discussion is underway regarding the issue of pouring water in Ranipokhari as the problem has surfaced due to decreasing water level, shared Sapkota.

After the reconstruction, 32.2 million litres of water was poured into Ranipokhari and there is now only around 20 million litres of water.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the Ranipokhari on October 21, 2020 after its reconstruction. Ranipokhari was damaged by the Gorkha earthquake. The National Reconstruction Authority had completed reconstruction of Ranipokhari in its own previous style after five years.
