KOHALPUR, Oct 27: Squatters who had built a settlement at Kohalpur-11 by encroaching upon the road at Chauraha have been removed after 12 years. Without the use of force, police removed 72 huts built on the roadside and being used for commercial and household purposes.
According to the mayor of Kohalpur Municipality, Lut Bahadur Rawat, a meeting between the newly elected local representatives and squatters has resolved the squatters’ issue permanently. “Governmental officials had tried to remove the squatters’ settlements many times in the past but without success,” said Rawat, adding, “But now the newly elected local representatives have been successful in doing so.”

Rawat said that the squatters themselves removed their huts on Thursday.
As informed by the ward chairperson of Kohalpur-10, Niraj Chalaune, a forestation program will soon be carried out in the area.
The first meeting between the local representatives and the squatters was held in August at the municipality’s office. In the second meeting, the squatters had agreed to leave the area after the Tihar festival.
Kohalpur Town Development Committee (TDC) and the Department of Roads (DoR) will now find it easy to expand the road as the squatters’ settlement built by encroaching upon the road has been removed, according to Aba Raj Khadka, chairperson of Kohalpur TDC.
