MAKWANPUR, Dec 28: Bahadur Singh Lama has been elected the parliamentary party leader of Nepali Congress in Bagmati Province. Lama won the election for the party’s leadership at the province level by defeating Indra Bahadur Baniya in the election held at the parliamentary party office in Hetauda on Wednesday. Lama secured 21 votes while Baniya got 16 votes.
Baniya, who had been the leader of the Bagmati Province Parliamentary Party in the previous term, contested the election as a member of the Provincial Assembly with plans to become the Chief Minister this time. Lama was elected to the Province Assembly from Nuwakot Constituency 2'B', while Baniya was elected an MP elected of the Province Assembly from Makwanpur 2 'B'. Both the leaders belong to Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba's faction. Lama is the central member of the Congress and Baniya is the president of NC Bagmati Province.

Bagmati Province has 37 provincial assembly members, 25 directly elected and 12 elected under proportional representation.. The polling, which was supposed to start at 2 PM, started at 3:30 PM due to a dispute over whether or not mobile phones can be taken to the polling place.
