Leaders express differing views on holding local polls

KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Leaders of different political parties have stressed on the need of holding the local bodies' election for the effective implementation of the constitution.

 KATHMANDU, Oct 12: Leaders of different political parties have stressed on the need of holding the local bodies' election for the effective implementation of the constitution. 


They were addressing an interaction organized by Reporters Club Nepal in the capital on Wednesday. 


CPN (UML) vice-chairman Yubraj Gyawali said holding the local body election was imperative for constitution implementation.

He opined that since the talk of amending the constitution which is being floated at present will only lead to conflict and confrontation, it was irrelevant and insisted on amending the constitution on the consensus of all the parties only after holding local elections. 


Chief Whip of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party Chin Kaji Shrestha said his party was not ready for constitution amendment compromising the republic, federalism and secularism. He stressed that the concerns of the Madhes-centric parties and the parties dissatisfied with some provisions of the constitution should be addressed. 


Maoist Centre leader Haribol Gajurel said the big parties were holding informal consultations regarding constitution amendment and that a proposal for constitution amendment would be brought in parliament soon.

Chief Whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal Dilnath Giri argued that the constitution could be amended only on the basis of consensus and cooperation among the political parties as no single party commanded two-thirds majority in parliament required for constitution amendment. 


He demanded that the provision of making Nepal a Hindu nation should be included while undertaking the constitution amendment. 


Leader of the United Madhesi Front Ram Naresh Raya called on the major political parties to be responsible for resolving the existing problems facing the country. He demanded that the process of amending the constitution be forwarded at the earliest for this purpose. RSS
