KATHMANDU, Sept 24: The weekend gives you the perfect opportunity to pick up a new skill. After all, you have some extra time on your hands. We recommend you learn pottery. You will not only have lots of fun with the pottery wheel but also the art of making something will get your creative juices flowing. And those who have taken pottery classes vouch that it is quite therapeutic too!
Apart from visiting Bhaktapur where you might be able to convince a potter to share his skills with you, there are various workshops you can attend that will teach you this skill for free or a nominal fee. Backstreet Academy in Chandol, Kathmandu, is a good place to head to if you want to learn this neat craft.

You will be taught to design your own pot and once you have your basic shape hammered out, you can even choose to adorn your creation with beautiful patterns and inscriptions. However, you have to be patient with this form of art as it takes two days for the pottery to dry. Take an extra t-shirt with you though as it can get quite muddy and you might need to change after the class.
Crafting a vessel from clay is an ancient art but one that you can very easily learn if you have some time on your hands. The techniques aren’t that hard to master but the process of learning pottery will be fun even if all you can come up with is a misshapen vessel.
