ROLPA, Nov 30: Tribeni Rural Municipality of Rolpa on Thursday rescued three children who were allegedly being taken to work in brick factories in Kathmandu.

As winter is the brick-making season, demand for laborers is high in brick factories. Police have stepped up vigil on passenger vehicles to prevent trafficking in child laborers.

Prakash BK, 13, a son of Liladhar BK, was rescued from Nigalpani-3. Likewise, Bishal Bali and Dhirendra Pun were rescued from Simpani Bazaar while on a bus headed for the capital. The children have been handed over to their families.

“Trafficking in the local children to Kathmandu to employ them in brick kilns has become serious problem here. We are searching for the kingpin involved,” said Santa Kumar Oli, chairperson of the rural municipality.

He also appealed to the locals not to send their schoolgoing children to work in brick kilns.

Save the Children is one of the few organizations that is working in the district to minimize child labor in the area and working with the local units.

“We are actively coordinating with the local units to bring down the number of children in labor,” said Indra Baduwal of Save the Children.
