SINDHULI, August 8: The locals of Hariharpur Gadhi Rural Municipality and Bagmati Rural Municipality are forced to use makeshift ladders to climb the unfinished concrete bridge and cross the Bagmati River.

The bridge project to connect Hariharpur Gadhi Rural Municipality-4 in Sindhuli and Bagmati Rural Municipality-4 in Makwanpur started over a decade ago. The locals are forced to make use of the unfinished bridge by using makeshift ladders to climb the bridge.

Despite the problem of crossing the bridge, the locals are happy to see the construction coming to an end. The local residents expect to be able to use the bridge by next year.

According to Karsang Lama, chief of Hariharpur Gadhi Municipality, the residents are finally getting a chance to use the bridge after 10 years of construction.

The construction of the 403 meters long bridge was given to Swachhand Bhairav Construction Service on July 15, 2011 to finish the bridge in five years with a budget of Rs 21 million. Despite extending the time period of the construction, it hasn’t been possible to complete the bridge in time.

According to Niranjan Thapa, Engineer of Madan Bhandari Highway West Block Project, the work on the bridge had to be discontinued due to the risk of floods during the monsoon seasons. The halted work on the bridge has led the local residents to use the bridge by climbing makeshift ladders. The construction of the bridge is expected to be finished by Dashain, Thapa said.

In addition, out of the 115 kilometers of roadway under construction on the West block of the Madan Bhandari Highway, 96 kilometers of roadway has been completed. Also among the 40 bridges under construction in the region, 34 are complete, Engineer Thapa said.
