A question has been raised about Pandey's promotion recommendation on the grounds that there is a difference in the date of birth in Pandey's educational qualification certificate and citizenship. A complaint was also filed at the State Affairs Committee of parliament against Major General Pandey.

When Pandey joined the army as an officer cadet in the year 2043 BS, his date of birth mentioned on his citizenship certificate is  23 Mangsir 2023 (8th December 1966). But the controversy started after it was found that his birth date, according to his educational certificates, is 12 Magh 2021  BS (25th January 1965).

It was alleged that Pandey's SLC board certificate, campus records and Tribhuvan University Examination Control Office's registration card mentioned his date of birth as 25th January 1965 but he corrected the date of birth in his citizenship as 8th December 1966.
