RAJBIRAJ, May 18: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi on Wednesday handed over compensation to the family members of the victims who died in police firing in Maleth some months ago.
DPM Nidhi handed over the check of Rs 1 million to each of the victim's family during a program organized in Maleth on Wednesday. Police had opened fire at protesters when they tried to disrupt a mass meeting organized in Maleth of Saptari district in course of CPN-UML's Mechi-Mahakali campaign in March. When the protesters started pelting stones, the police were compelled to open fire to bring the situation under control. But unfortunately, five people lost their lives. The deceased were identified as Sanjan Mehta, Birendra Mahato, Pitambar Mandal of Maleth and Anand Sah of Praswanni along with Iner Yadav of Jamuni, Madhepura.
Speaking at the program, DPM Nidhi expressed his sorrow toward the incident and also informed that the victims have officially been declared as martyrs by the state. He further informed that the government has formed a high level investigation committee to find out more about the incident. Addressing the mass on Wednesday, DPM Nidhi said, “The new constitution has no meaning if it is not accepted by people of all communities. Yes there are some setbacks but they can be corrected in course of time. As of now, amendment of the constitution should be our first priority.”
Informing the locals about the success of the first round of local elections, DPN Nidhi urged the locals to create a favorable environment for the second phase scheduled for June 14.
