KATHMANDU, Dec 31: The representatives of the CPN (Maoist Center) have stressed the need to move ahead by electing a new leadership unanimously, through the party’s ongoing 8th National General Convention in Kathmandu. Although the party’s election commission published the schedule for the election of leadership on Saturday, the process for announcing the party's central committee has been moved forward by abruptly halting the process as per the schedule.

While there is a provision that the entire central committee and party leadership should be selected from the election process in the closed session, most of the delegates said that a unanimous leadership should be elected to make the party strong and united.

Representative Dr Krishna Prasad Khanal said that a committee should be formed unanimously as the election tradition has not developed much. He said that he is not in favor of not holding an election as the party is unorganized at present. Khanal further warned of a faction emerging in the future if the elections are held.

Meanwhile, Liladhar Khanal opined that competition within the party will make it purer and stronger if elections are held. Leaders who have made a name for themselves with their work and achievements can move forward.

Parshuram Rimal said that a different kind of democratic election should be practiced if elections are held. Stating that the active members of CPN (Maoist Center) are not aware of the possibility of elections, he said that the elections can weaken the party further. He also said that only through consensus and cooperation can the party become dynamic.

Representative Bir Bahadur Rayamajhi said that active and honest members should get a place in the party. Stating that there are chances of rich people manipulating the elections, he said that elections should not be held.

Similarly, Teknath Neupane emphasized the need to move the party forward unanimously rather than going for election. Terming that an election only ends up as victory and defeat, he remarked that no one wins or loses when the leadership is elected through consensus.
