KATHMANDU, Jan 26: As the country is celebrating the Martyrs week, martyr Dharmabhakta Mathema was remembered by organizing a program here on Thursday.
Dharmabhakta, one of the revered martyrs who attained martyrdom in course of the struggle against the autocratic Rana regime, was hanged from a tree at local Sifal by the then Rana leadership on Magh 13, 1997 BS.

His kith and kin, neighbors and others gathered today to pay tribute to the brave martyr.
The program was organized by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office. On the occasion, former ambassador Prof Kedar Bhakta Mathema said Dharmabhakta, who was a physical instructor to King Tribhuvan, served as a messenger between the King and the people and sacrificed his life for ushering in democracy in the country. He expressed his concern over political parties failing to follow the path of sacrifice and dedication shown by the great freedom fighter.
Dharmabhakta was born on Asoj 9, 1966 BS at local Om Bahal in the capital. He later formed the Nepal Prajaparishad, country's first political party, in 1993 BS to lead revolution against the Rana dynasty and dedicated his life to liberate the people from the autocratic Rana rulers. He studied in Darjeeling and Kolkata, India.
He had been arrested by the Rana regime as he was attending a secret meeting of the Praja Parishad at Lainchour and had been executed. His father Adibhakta Mathema was the first-class non-gazetted officer during the Rana regime. RSS
