KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Nepali Congress Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that the US-funded project, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact agreement, and the ruling coalition are two different subjects. Speaking at a press conference organized by the Nepal Press Union Chitwan on Friday, Dr Mahat said, “NC is just asking the other parties to discuss the MCC in parliament. This does not mean to break the alliance.”
According to him, NC is confident that there will be no problem in the alliance due to the MCC as the ruling coalition and the MCC are two different subjects. Stating that MCC is in the interest of Nepal, he said, “MCC intends to develop electricity transmission lines as well as roads in our country. How can this be treason? Let’s table the MCC agreement in parliament and discuss it if there is any disadvantage. Why such hesitation?”

He also commented that political parties should have clear opinions about MCC. He said, “The political parties should decide whether or not to pass the MCC.”
Reminding that Maoist Center chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had sent a letter stating that he would pass the MCC agreement, Dr Mahat asked, “Didn’t Dahal sign the letter stating that he would pass the MCC?” Similarly, he requested CPN-UML not to change their statement as the then Oli-led government had tried to pass the MCC through parliament as well. He said, “How can people talk one thing about MCC today and another thing about it tomorrow? This does not make sense.”
