KATHMANDU, April 5: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel on Wednesday directed private schools not to charge exorbitant fees from the students.
Private schools have increased the tuition fees by up to 30 percent and charged up to Rs 200,000 as admission fee for the upcoming academic session that begins from April 14. There are around 6,000 private schools across the country.

"The education sector is not the field to earn maximum profit," said Minister Pokharel, speaking at a welcome program organized by Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal. "Private schools need to charge fees from students as per the rules," he said upon receiving complaints about exorbitant fees charged by private schools. "Please stop charging fees against the rules immediately."
However, Minister Pokharel did not show commitment to take action against the schools violating the rules in course of charging excessive fees.
Minister Pokharel further said that the standard of education would not improve by imposing loads of textbooks on the shoulders of students. "It is completely wrong to force students for buying textbooks that they can't carry while going to schools," he said.
