KATHMANDU, July 13: In line with the recently amended education act, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has started collecting data on government teachers holding permanent residency (PR) visa of foreign countries.

Echoing the provision in the Civil Service Act, the Education Act 2016 calls for sacking teachers who hold PR of foreign countries and still retain their posts at government schools. According to the MoE, the ministry decided to collect the data of PR/DV holders on Sunday.

“We have forwarded the decision to the district education and regional education offices through the Department Education through,” said Dr Hari Prasad Lamsal, spokesman at the MoE.

“Just as the civil servants, government teachers who hold residency permits of foreign countries will be sacked or will be considered ineligible for government service,” he added.

There are about 120,000 teachers working in the government and public schools. However, the number of PR/DV holders is minimal, said MoE officials.

Earlier, it was found that a few dozens of the total of 83,000 bureaucrats were holding foreign PR/DV.

Under the Civil Service Act, government institutions, including Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Tribhuvan University are required to amend their statutes to bar employees with PR, DV and citizenships of other countries from serving in the organizations.

The requires government employees to make a choice between the foreign PR/DV or the government job.

The APF has already amended its laws to reflect the act. However, the state-owned corporations have yet to follow suit.
