KATHMANDU, Aug 30: It has been revealed that Surya Gas Industry refilled Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders of substandard quality without conducting hydraulic test and sent them to market for sale.
A monitoring team led by officials from Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) sealed the cooking gas cylinders after they discovered 24 date-expired cooking gas cylinders, said Madhav Timilsina, president of the Consumer Rights Investigation Forum .
A hydraulic test is a way in which pressure vessels such as pipelines, plumbing, gas cylinders, boilers and fuel tanks can be tested for strength and leaks.
“It has been found that compulsory hydraulic tests were not carried out on the cylinders,” he said, “The company has made a mockery of the law.”
The team under the command of NSBM Director General Bishwo Babu Pudasaini also inspected Chandeshwori and Sagarmatha gas industries. The team found that Chandeshwori doesn’t have equipment for hydraulic test. Chemist Manoj Upadhyay told Republica Online that the gas was leaking out from the new cylinders of Sagarmatha Gas.
“We will take a legal action against the cylinder manufacturing company,” he said.
NSBM said it will take against gas refilling industries flouting the law.
