KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Gyan Bahadur Shahi aka Gyanendra Shahi, the chief whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), has said that a member of parliament (MP) should not be suspended just because s/he is being investigated by the police.

Speaking at the meeting of the Drafting Committee of the House of Representatives on Friday, he also mentioned that MPs should not be suspended until the court proves them guilty. He said that if a member of parliament is arrested during the presidential election, there should be no provision in the regulations such that his/her right to vote is violated.

Shahi said that he could not agree with the provision of regulations to weaken the MPs elected by the people. He also said that it is appropriate from the point of view of the constitution and the law to provide for the suspension of an MP only after the court proves him guilty.

Shahi said that it would be against the constitution to suspend MPs just because they are detained for investigation.
