SURKHET, Aug 6: Bheriganga Municipality has prohibited the use of mobile phones and junk foods in schools with the aim to improve education quality at the local level.
Deputy Mayor Renu Acharya informed Republica that a proposal on the prohibition, which is applicable for both teachers and students, was endorsed by the third Municipal Assembly. Acharya said the move was taken after students were found losing attention and interest toward their studies due to the unchecked use of cell phones.
Community schools campaign against junk food
She also said that this rule is for both government and private schools. Like mobile phones, junk food too has been banned in the local schools. Acharya said the move to ban junk food is aimed at making parents more responsible toward their children’s health. She added that school canteens serving junk food inside schools will soon be closed.
Generally, teachers go home early especially on Fridays in the name of extracurricular activities. The municipality has also asked all schools to remain open till 4 pm six days a week.
It has also introduced the provision of seeking mandatory permission from the municipality if any school teacher wants to resign. The municipality said if any teacher is found involved in any political activities during school time, then action will be taken against him/her.
Those schools giving priority to the local language and English medium will be facilitated with all requirements. The municipality will be monitoring schools every three months.
To improve student profile and schools, the municipality has asked the schools to focus on extracurricular activities, remedial class and skill development. As per the concept of Green Schools, the municipality has launched a ‘One School, Five Trees’ campaign.
