NEPALGUNJ, July 27: Nepal Army (NA) on Wednesday rescued 104 locals of Holiya-4, Chaufari village who were marooned after swollen Rapti River entered their settlements.
They were rescued by a NA chopper with an initiation of District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee, Banke.
Chief District Officer, Ravi Lal Pant told Republica Online that the locals have been taken to a safer place in Khadicha.
“Locals who were stranded in an island created by the river have also been rescued,” said CDO Pant.
Some 673 people from Holiya, Betahani and Kachanapur were rescued through helicopters and boats till yesterday evening. According to CDO Pant, 498 were rescued through a chopper and reaming 175 though boats and other equipments.
Holiya, Fattepur, Gangapur, Matehiya, Betahani, Khaskusma, Kachanapur, Baijapur and Binauna among other VDCs have been inundated by swollen Rapti River following incessant rainfall.
According to the Kusum-based Flood Recording Center, the water level in the river at 11 pm yesterday was 8.15 meters.
Reader Bhadra Bahadur Thapa said that the water level in the river is receding gradually.
The water gushes into Holiya, Fattepur and Gangapur among other VDCs after the water level crosses 4.70 meters at Kusum.
CDO Panta said that the early warning system and prompt rescue prevented human casualty.
