BIRGUNJ, Feb 3: Narayani Sub Regional Hospital remained tense throughout the day after a newly born baby disappeared from the maternity ward on Friday.

It is learnt that the baby was stolen by a woman.

The mother and kin of the stolen bay were complaining and whining over their lost newborn. “I need my grandson at any cost,” demanded Ramawati Devi, grandmother of the lost baby, complaining, “this is a sheer negligence on the part of the hospital.”

Asha Paswan, wife of Mukesh Paswan of Bazaartole Chhapkaiya VDC-1 in Birgunj gave birth to a baby boy at 11:40 am today. Nurses were preparing to shift Asha to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from the maternity ward after noticing some health problems with both the mother and newborn.

According to Ramawati, the baby was lost – few minutes after it was born - at 12 pm. According to him a white-complexioned woman wearing a red-striped shawl was spotted at the maternity ward.  She went near the baby. I was busy clearing the blood-stained clothes used during delivery. I could hear the baby cry until that time. Then when I turned around to take a look at the baby, it was already gone.”

Paswan, the father-of-four, had gone to buy bread in a nearby shop for his sons when the newborn was stolen.

According to Chittaranjan Sah,  the medical superintendent of the hospital, the baby was lost after it was handed over to its kin.

Even though the hospital was equipped with seven surveillance cameras in the last fiscal year, they are no longer working these days.

The suspect (woman)  had been visiting the hospital since the last five days.

Police have launched a manhunt for the culprit based on the look as described by the hospital visitors.
