The post fell vacant after the party took action against Chandra Bahadur Khadka of Arghakhanchi after he joined the CPN-UML.

CPN-UML has fielded Chandra Bahadur Khadka as its candidate. Dirghanarayan Pandey from Nepali Congress has also contested for the post. The Election Office has already given the tree election symbol to Pandey and the sun symbol to Khadka. Both the ruling and opposition alliances have claimed that they will secure the position in the by-election.

Opposition coalition claims that there will be floor crossings in Lumbini as it did in Bagmati.
