KATHMANDU, July 4: Nepal Bar Association (NBA), an umbrella organization of lawyers across the country, has said today's activities of the courts would not be affected by the demonstration launched in protest of the arrest of a lawyer. The lawyer was arrested in connection with his alleged involvement in an incident of thrashing an employee at the Lalitpur District Court.

Although the NBA held protest demonstrations today, activities of courts including the Supreme Court were not halted.

Lawyers affiliated to the NBA did not participate in any hearings on regular cases except for hearing on habeas corpus cases on Monday.

General-Secretary of NBA, Anjita Khanal said the demonstrations have been organized without affecting court activities and service recipients.

Police have arrested advocate Amir Lamichhane on the charge of manhandling an employee of the District Court, Lalitpur, Premika Tamang. The Bar has been protesting against the arrest of advocate Lamichhane. On Monday, it demanded the government release advocate Lamichhane within 24 hours, make CCTV footage public and register Lamichhane's affidavit.

Police arrested Lamichhane saying he had attacked Tamang, a non-Gazetted First Class Officer of the District Court, Lalitpur, on June 28 in her office at the Court. Tamang had lodged a complaint against Lamichhane on the same day.

Judges and employees of Lalitpur District Court held a discussion on this matter at the Supreme Court today, said Spokesperson at the Supreme Court, Bimal Poudel.
