POKHARA, April 26: The ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center) are likely to form a new government in Gandaki province.

Chief of Gandaki Province, Prithvi Man Gurung, on Tuesday called on the parties to form a majority government within two days in accordance with Article 168, Clause 2 of the Constitution. Clause 2 provides that two or more parties can form a government. Earlier, a government was formed under the leadership of the CPN-UML .

UML Gandaki provincial assembly Parliamentary Party (PP) Khagraj Adhikari with the support of the CPN (Maoist Center) was formed on January 9. After the Maoist Center withdrew its support, the Chief Minister Adhikari, who was in the minority, proposed a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on Saturday. After the assembly did not give a vote of confidence, the provincial chief called for the formation of a new government.

Since no single party has a single majority in the provincial assembly, the provincial chief has called for the formation of the government as per Article 168, sub-section 2 of the constitution. Now two or more parties will have to submit a claim for the formation of a majority government.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the office of the provincial chief, Chandi Prasad Aryal, it is written, “This statement has been issued for the information of all those concerned with the call by the provincial chief Prithvi Man Gurung to form the government within 4 PM on Thursday, April 27, 2023 according to sub-section 2 of Article 168 of the Constitution of Nepal.

In order to form a government in Gandaki province, two or more parties have to come together to form a majority. In the 60-member Gandaki Provincial Assembly, there are 27 provincial assembly members from the Nepali Congress, 22 from the CPN-UML, 8 from the CPN-Maoist Center, two from the RPP and one member who joined the CPN (Unified Socialist) Party after winning from the independent candidacy. Now the Nepali Congress and the Maoist Center are preparing to form a government together. It is said that Rajeev Gurung of CPN (United Socialist) Party will also support the new government. If that happens, it seems that the government will be formed easily.
