NEPALGUNJ, Feb 22: Leader of main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) Dr Shekhar Koirala has said that the present government doesn’t have moral grounds to stay in power.

Speaking at a press meet organized by Nepal Press Union, Banke in Nepalgunj on Saturday, Koirala argued that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli should step down from his post to pave the way for investigation after erstwhile Information Minister Gokul Prasad Baskota dragged into controversy following the leakage of audio recording of the conversation between Baskota and an agent of Swiss company in which the minister is heard bargaining for Rs 700 million bribe amount.

“After the audio was leaked, people have pointed finger at the Prime Minister as his cabinet colleague was found allegedly involved in corruption. Therefore, he should resign on moral grounds and pave the way for a free and fair investigation into the case.”

Reminding the parliament disruption by the NC on Thursday, he stressed that anyone involved in the corruption should not be exempted from the punishment as per the law.

On the occasion, he also blamed the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) for having dual standard on Baluwatar land grab case. “Our party condemns the act of the CIAA for sparing the former Prime Ministers in the case while registering a case against Deputy PM and minister of the same cabinet,” he noted.

Due to instances of various mega scandals, the government has proved itself unsuccessful steering the country towards a difficult situation. “However, Congress will rescue the country from this situation through the principles set by BP Koirala.”

On a different note, Koirala clarified that he does not belong to any faction within his party.

Responding to the media persons, he admitted the fact that NC has been failing to justify its strong role as the main opposition party.

Koirala is here to attend party events in districts of Province 5 including Banke, Bardiya, Dang and Kapilvastu.
