KATHMANDU, July 2: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba briefed party officials on the agreement with the CPN-UML during a meeting of party office-bearers and former office-bearers at his residence in Budhanilkantha this morning.
Deuba discussed the power-sharing deal reached with the UML, explaining that the leadership of the government formed under this agreement would alternate between the two parties. However, the initial leader of the government remains unclear. Sources indicate that there is an understanding that UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli will lead the government for the first term, followed by Deuba.
NC Prez Deuba calls office-bearers meeting
NC Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat informed reporters that the power-sharing agreement between the NC and the UML was necessary to prevent democracy from being endangered by political instability. He stated that a new government would be formed with national consensus and include interested parties.
Dr Mahat also mentioned that, based on the review and past experience, an amendment to the constitution will be pursued to ensure political stability. He added that a meeting of the performance committee has been called for 9AM on Wednesday to approve the agreement with the UML.
Following the meeting, Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak stated that the new government would be formed in accordance with Article 76 (2) of the Constitution. If not, things will proceed according to the constitution, he said.
