KATHMANDU, April 30: Nepali Congress, the main opposition party, has demanded that the government scrap the Constituency Development Fund and divert the money to the ongoing efforts to tackle the coronavirus.

A meeting of the party's Central Working Committee held on Wednesday evening took a decision to this effect, according to a press release issued by the party last night.

The party, in its decision, has urged the government to allocate required funds to effectively run programs for preventing and controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.

The party has also suggested to the government to bring relief packages for the people hit hard by the coronavirus.

In view of the rising coronavirus cases, the party has called on the government to accelerate tests for COVID-19 across the country. "We also urge the government to set up quarantine facilities as per the required standards," reads the press release.

Expressing serious concern over the recent alleged abduction of Janata Samajbadi Party lawmaker Surendra Yadav, the NC has demanded the government launch a probe into the incident.

The party has demanded the government agencies concerned investigate the alleged corruption in the purchase of medical equipment. "It is highly deplorable that some of those who are currently in power have themselves indulged into corruption, taking an undue advantage of this hour of crisis," the party accused.

Among other decisions, the party also urged the government to immediately call the federal parliament session.

The NC also concluded that the Oli-led government has lost its political and legal bases to rule the country given its poor performance. "The government has truly undermined the people's mandate that the ruling party had achieved through the elections," the party added.

In its suggestions, the NC urged the government to bring back Nepali nationals who are stranded in foreign countries due to the coronavirus outbreak.
